Originally designed as an enterprise thin client, the HP t640 is an interesting example of hardware that can find a second life well beyond its original purpose.
Powered by the AMD Ryzen Embedded R1505G with integrated Radeon Vega 3 graphics, the t640 combines compact size with a useful amount of processing and graphics capability. One of the features that makes the t640 interesting is its integrated Radeon Vega 3 graphics.
Rather than relying solely on basic display hardware, the Ryzen Embedded R1505G combines CPU and Radeon graphics in the same embedded platform. This provides useful graphics capability for desktop environments, display applications, multimedia and experimentation without requiring a separate graphics card.
For a machine this small, that is a useful advantage.
Modern Connectivity in a Compact System
The t640 has a particularly useful selection of ports for its size.
The standard platform includes a front USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 port, multiple USB-A ports, Gigabit Ethernet, audio connectivity and three DisplayPort outputs. HP also offered configurable rear I/O options, meaning the exact rear connectivity can differ between t640 configurations.
That front USB-C port is one of the details we particularly like about this machine.
DDR4 + M.2 Storage
The t640 uses DDR4 memory and provides an M.2 storage socket. HP’s specifications list both M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe storage configurations for the platform.
Storage type may be M.2 SATA or M.2 NVMe, depending on availability and the configuration supplied.
This means the exact storage interface should be verified from the configuration shown with the particular system rather than assuming that every M.2 drive is NVMe.

Why We Stock It
The t640 caught our attention because it sits in an interesting space between a traditional thin client and a compact computer.
Its AMD Ryzen Embedded platform provides 2 CPU cores and 4 threads, while the integrated Radeon Vega 3 graphics make it more capable on the graphics side than many conventional entry-level thin clients. AMD designed the R1000 family for compact embedded applications, including networking, edge and graphics-oriented systems.
